Canadian Forces Radio and Television

General

Canadian Forces Radio and Television (CFRT) is a Director General Personnel and Family Support Services (DGPFSS) Personnel Support Program (PSP) that broadcasts radio and television programming 24 hours per day, seven days per week to Canadian Forces (CF) operations in parts of the world such as:

Afghanistan    /    Egypt    /    Europe    /    Golan Heights    /    Kuwait    /    Pakistan

Technical

From the CFRT studio facility located in Ottawa, CFRT programming is encrypted and delivered via trans-atlantic fibre to a CFRT satellite uplink facility located in Europe. From Europe CFRT is then broadcast on a commercial satellite to the deployed operations.

Television Programming

CFRT consists of two video channels, English and French.  Programming for these two channels is scheduled on a weekly basis with:

  • Local, regional, national and international news,
  • Major league sports such as NHL hockey, CFL and NFL football, as well as special sporting events such as UFC, The Olympics, The Canadian Curling Championships, Golf and Soccer,
  • A large variety of popular Canadian variety programs with some limited American programming.

Canadian networks and producers have been more than generous in providing deployed CF members a wide variety of Canadian television programming.  At the same time PSP is continually striving to accommodate programming requests by deployed CF members.

We continually strive to acquire American television shows but these are very difficult to acquire.  For this reason we only have a limited number of American based shows on CFRT.

Radio Programming

CBC English radio and RDI are broadcast along with one English stereo channel and one French stereo channel.  The stereo channels are broadcast from the Canadian region supplying the greatest number of deployed members.
